What Claude is
Claude is a chat assistant made by Anthropic, a San Francisco AI company. You can use it in a web browser, in desktop apps for Windows and macOS, and in apps for iPhone and Android. Behind the chat are Anthropic's own model families. As of October 2026 the pricing page lists Haiku (fast and cheap), Sonnet (the everyday workhorse), Opus (the most capable of the regular models) and Fable, Anthropic's newest top-tier model, which Pro and Max subscribers can use through usage credits or a share of their weekly limits.
The same models are sold to developers through the Claude API, and many other products build on them. That matters for a review of the consumer app: the quality of answers is largely the model, while the limits, features and price are the subscription.
Key features
Writing and editing
Claude's reputation is built on writing. Widely shared user feedback describes its prose as less formulaic than many rivals and its edits as respectful of the original voice. You can set a writing style, give it examples to imitate, and keep instructions in a project so you do not repeat them each time.
Long documents and projects
You can upload PDFs, spreadsheets, code and images and ask questions across them. Projects keep files and instructions together so every chat in that project starts with the same context. The free plan allows up to five projects; paid plans lift that.
Artifacts, Docs, Slides and Design
Artifacts open beside the chat as a document, web page, chart or small app that you can edit and share. As of October 2026, even the free plan lists Claude Design, Slides and Docs, which turn a request into a design, a presentation or a document you can keep working on.
Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It works in a terminal, inside editors such as VS Code and JetBrains, and in the Claude apps. It reads a codebase, proposes changes, edits files and runs commands with your permission. It is included with Pro and above. Developers often cite it as the main reason they pay for Claude.
Search, research and browsing
Web search is on every plan, so answers can cite current pages. Paid plans add deeper research tasks and Claude in Chrome, an extension that can read and act on web pages for you, plus access to Microsoft 365 content.
Connectors and MCP
Claude supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard Anthropic created for letting AI assistants talk to other apps. Connectors bring in tools like Google Drive, Gmail, calendars and many third-party services, and the desktop app can connect to programs running on your own computer. For example, our own app Hark, a meeting recorder, can connect to Claude Desktop so Claude can read your meeting transcripts (how that works); we make Hark, so weigh that mention accordingly.
Pricing (as of October 2026)
Prices below are in US dollars, from Anthropic's pricing page, checked October 2026. Taxes may apply depending on where you live.
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, Artifacts, Design/Slides/Docs, up to 5 projects. No Opus. |
| Pro | $20/month, or $17/month billed yearly ($200) | More usage, Claude Code, unlimited projects, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, usage credits for top models. |
| Max 5x | $100/month | About 5x Pro usage, higher output limits, priority at peak times, early features, $100/month API credits. |
| Max 20x | $200/month | About 20x Pro usage, same extras, $200/month API credits. |
| Team Standard | $25/seat monthly, $20/seat yearly | 2 to 150 users, central billing, SSO, more usage than Pro. |
| Team Premium | $125/seat monthly, $100/seat yearly | 5x the usage of a Standard seat. |
| Enterprise | $20/seat/month plus usage at API rates (20-seat minimum) | SCIM, audit logs, custom retention, IP allowlisting, HIPAA-ready option. |
Max is billed monthly only. Usage on every plan is measured in rolling session and weekly limits rather than a fixed message count, so how far a plan goes depends on the model you pick and how long your chats and files are.
Strengths
- Writing quality. The most common praise in user feedback is that Claude's drafts and edits read naturally and follow style instructions closely.
- Coding. Claude Code is included from Pro, and Claude models are offered inside other developer tools such as GitHub Copilot and Cursor, a sign of how widely they are used for code.
- Working with long material. Projects and file uploads make it practical to ask questions across contracts, reports or a codebase.
- Open connections. MCP means Claude can work with many apps, including ones running on your own computer.
- A useful free plan. Free users get search, Artifacts and the document tools, not just a basic chat box.
Weaknesses
- Usage limits. The most frequent complaint is running into limits, especially with long chats, big files, Claude Code or the top models. Heavy users are pushed toward Max at $100 or $200 a month.
- Limits are hard to predict. Because usage is measured by session and week rather than a message count, it is hard to know in advance how much a plan covers.
- Fewer media tools. Claude focuses on text, code and documents. If you want built-in image or video generation, ChatGPT and Gemini offer more.
- Top models cost extra. The newest Fable models draw on usage credits or a larger share of limits even on paid plans.
- Occasional over-caution. Some users report refusals or heavy caveats on harmless requests, though this is less common than in earlier versions.
Privacy and security
What Anthropic states, as of October 2026:
- On consumer plans (Free, Pro, Max), Anthropic's consumer terms say it may use your conversations to train models unless you opt out in your account settings. Even with the opt-out, conversations you send as feedback and content flagged for safety review can still be used.
- Team and Enterprise plans are covered by Anthropic's commercial terms, which are separate from the consumer terms.
- Enterprise adds admin controls: SSO, SCIM, audit logs, a compliance API, custom data retention, IP allowlisting and a HIPAA-ready configuration.
If you handle confidential material on a personal plan, check the training setting in your account first.
Platforms
- Web: claude.ai in any modern browser
- Desktop apps: Windows and macOS
- Mobile apps: iPhone, iPad and Android
- Claude Code: terminal, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs and the Claude apps
- Browser extension: Claude in Chrome (paid plans)
- Developers: the Claude API, plus major cloud platforms
Alternatives
- ChatGPT: the most widely used assistant, with more media features and a cheaper Go plan. See Claude vs ChatGPT.
- Perplexity: better if what you mostly want is searched answers with sources.
- Microsoft Copilot: makes sense if you already pay for Microsoft 365 and live in Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Cursor and GitHub Copilot: if coding is your main use and you want AI inside your editor.
Who should use Claude
Claude suits writers, analysts, researchers and developers who spend their AI time on text and code and want careful, readable answers. Start on the free plan; if you hit limits or want Claude Code, Pro is the sensible next step. Max is worth it only if you use Claude for hours every day, typically for coding.
If your main needs are image generation, voice chat with lots of personality, or the cheapest possible paid plan, compare ChatGPT first.
