Comparison

Claude vs ChatGPT: which assistant fits your work?

Claude, from Anthropic, and ChatGPT, from OpenAI, are the two assistants most often compared by people who write, code or work with long documents. Their main paid plans cost the same $20 a month. ChatGPT tries to do everything in one app; Claude focuses on text, reasoning, documents and code, and does those very well.

Research-based comparison, checked October 2026. We don't take payment or affiliate fees from anyone we compare. How we review. Our own app, Hark, uses Claude for its optional AI meeting notes, so read this with that in mind.

The short verdict

  • Choose Claude if your work is mostly writing, editing, analyzing long documents or coding. Paid plans include Claude Code and a context window of up to 1 million tokens, and Claude Pro is $17 a month on annual billing.
  • Choose ChatGPT if you want one assistant for everything, including image creation, voice conversations with video, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks and plugins. It also has a cheaper $8 Go plan.
  • Developers should try both coding agents (Claude Code and Codex) on real work. Both are included in the $20 plans with limits.

What each one is

Claude is Anthropic's assistant, built on its own family of models (Haiku, Sonnet, Opus and the newer Fable). Anthropic positions it for thoughtful writing, analysis and software work, and much of its product (Projects, Artifacts, Claude Code, integrations with Chrome and Microsoft 365) is aimed at people doing serious work. See our Claude AI review for more.

ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant, built on its GPT models. It has the broadest feature list of any mainstream assistant: chat, images, voice, video, deep research, custom GPTs, plugins, an agent mode called ChatGPT Work and the Codex coding agent. See our ChatGPT review.

Writing quality

Writing is where the two are most often compared, and where opinions are strongest. Across widely shared user feedback, a consistent pattern shows up: people describe Claude's prose as more natural, less formulaic and better at matching a requested voice, and they rate it highly for editing long drafts without flattening them. ChatGPT is described as fast, flexible and good at structured output (lists, tables, outlines), with a style some find more generic unless given clear instructions.

Both follow detailed instructions well, and both improve a lot when you give them examples of the tone you want. For grammar fixes alone, a dedicated tool may be simpler; see Grammarly vs QuillBot.

Coding

Both companies now sell coding agents inside their consumer plans, not just chat about code. Claude Code is included with Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise; it works in the terminal and editors, reads your project, makes changes across files and runs commands. Claude has a strong reputation among developers, and Anthropic's higher plans (Max at $100 or $200) exist largely for people who run it for hours a day. Codex, OpenAI's agent, has limited access on Free and Go and expanded usage on Plus and Pro.

In practice, heavy users of either agent hit usage limits on the $20 plans and move up a tier. If you want AI inside your editor rather than a separate agent, AI code editors and editor plugins are another route.

Long documents and context

Claude's pricing page lists a context window of up to 1 million tokens on every plan, varying by model. ChatGPT's pricing page lists 256K tokens for its reasoning models on Plus (about 320 pages of input), 400K on Pro, and smaller windows for its fast Instant model (54K on Plus). If you work with long contracts, research papers, transcripts or large codebases, Claude can take in more at once. Claude's Projects let you keep a set of documents attached to a workspace so every chat can refer to them; ChatGPT has a similar Projects feature.

Features beyond text

This is ChatGPT's clearest advantage. It creates and edits images on every plan, has voice conversations on every plan with voice-with-video from Go upward, offers custom GPTs, scheduled tasks, a plugin directory, a built-in browser, interactive charts and extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets. Pro adds Dot, an always-on agent.

Claude's extras are aimed at work: Artifacts (documents, charts, diagrams and small apps built alongside the chat), file creation and code execution even on the free plan, memory, Projects, task handoff and scheduling, and integrations with Chrome and Microsoft 365 on Pro. Image generation isn't on its plans. Claude also works as a connector hub through the Model Context Protocol, which lets apps (including our own) give Claude access to their data.

Usage limits are the hidden part of the price. Claude's limits work on a rolling five-hour window plus weekly limits, and paid plans can buy extra usage credits. ChatGPT describes everyday text chat as unlimited (subject to abuse guardrails) on every plan, with limits on tools, uploads, images and deep research. If you send many short messages, ChatGPT's free and Plus plans tend to feel roomier; if you send long documents, Claude's larger context helps.

Privacy and data

Claude. Anthropic's privacy center says consumer chats (Free, Pro, Max) are used for training if you allow it in the Model Improvement setting, if a chat is flagged for safety review, or if you join a program like its Trusted Tester program. Incognito chats are never used for training. Team plans don't train on your content by default, and Enterprise adds audit logs, SCIM, custom data retention and a HIPAA-ready option.

ChatGPT. OpenAI's pricing page states that content on Free, Go, Plus and Pro is used to train its models, with an opt-out. Business and Enterprise get a dedicated workspace, SSO, admin controls and certifications including SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001, and Enterprise adds data residency in many regions.

The practical difference is the default framing: Claude asks you to choose, while ChatGPT trains unless you switch it off. Check the setting either way, and keep sensitive material out of personal accounts.

Platforms and integrations

Both run on the web and have apps for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. ChatGPT has a larger plugin and app directory and Office/Sheets extensions. Claude connects to other tools through MCP connectors and has Chrome and Microsoft 365 integrations on paid plans. For assistants built into a specific suite, see Gemini vs ChatGPT (Google) and Copilot vs ChatGPT (Microsoft).

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude better than ChatGPT? +

It depends on the job. Claude is widely preferred for long-form writing, careful reading of long documents and coding, and its paid plans include the Claude Code agent and a context window of up to 1 million tokens. ChatGPT has more features in one app: image creation, voice with video, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks and plugins. Many people use both.

Is Claude cheaper than ChatGPT? +

The main plans cost the same: Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus were both $20 a month in the US as of October 2026, and Claude Pro drops to $17 a month on annual billing. ChatGPT also has an $8 Go plan with no Claude equivalent. At the top end, Claude Max starts at $100 a month and ChatGPT Pro starts at $100 a month.

Can Claude generate images like ChatGPT? +

Image creation is a ChatGPT feature on every plan, with limits on the free tier. Claude's plans, as listed on its pricing page in October 2026, don't include image generation. Claude can read and analyze images you upload, and it can build charts, diagrams and small web apps as Artifacts.

Does Claude or ChatGPT train on my conversations? +

On personal plans, both can, and both let you control it. Anthropic says it uses consumer chats for training if you allow it in the Model Improvement setting, or if a chat is flagged for safety review; incognito chats are excluded. OpenAI says content on Free, Go, Plus and Pro is used for training with an opt-out. Both say their business plans don't train on your content by default.

Which is better for coding, Claude or ChatGPT? +

Both are strong. Claude Pro and above include Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent for the terminal and editors, and Claude has a long-standing reputation among developers for code quality. ChatGPT plans include Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, with more usage on Plus and Pro. If coding is your main use, try each agent on your own codebase before paying for a higher tier.

Can I use Claude for free? +

Yes. Claude's free plan includes chat on the web, desktop and mobile apps, web search, file creation, code execution, memory and Artifacts, with usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour window. It uses the Sonnet and Haiku models; Opus requires a paid plan.
