Comparison
Gemini vs ChatGPT: which AI assistant should you use?
Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT are the two most widely used general AI assistants. They overlap a lot, cost about the same at the main paid tier, and both have usable free plans. The real differences are where they live (Google's apps versus a standalone app with its own ecosystem), what comes bundled, and how each handles your data.

The short verdict
- Choose Gemini if you already use Gmail, Google Docs, Drive and an Android phone, want your AI plan to include Google storage, or regularly feed it very long documents. Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage and Gemini inside Gmail and Docs for $19.99 a month.
- Choose ChatGPT if you want the broadest single assistant: custom GPTs, projects, scheduled tasks, voice with video, plugins, desktop apps and the Codex coding agent, all in one place. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month.
- On a budget, both free plans are good enough for everyday questions and writing. The cheapest paid tiers are Google AI Plus ($4.99) and ChatGPT Go ($8, which may include ads).

What each one is
ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant and the product that made AI chat mainstream. It is a standalone app on the web, phones and desktops, built around OpenAI's GPT models. Over time it has grown into a whole workspace: projects, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks, plugins, a built-in browser, the Codex coding agent and an agent mode called ChatGPT Work. Our ChatGPT review covers it in more depth.
Gemini is Google's assistant, built on Google's Gemini models. It runs as an app on the web, phones and desktops, but its main advantage is that it is woven into Google's other products: Gmail, Docs, Drive, Android, Chrome and Search. Paid Gemini comes as part of a "Google AI" subscription that also includes Google storage, the same storage you would otherwise buy as Google One.
Features compared
Everyday chat and writing
For the everyday jobs most people use an assistant for (drafting emails, summarizing articles, explaining a topic, brainstorming, rewriting a paragraph) both are capable, and the gap is smaller than marketing suggests. Widely shared user feedback tends to describe ChatGPT as the more polished all-rounder with a more consistent tone, and Gemini as quicker to pull in fresh information from Google Search. Both still make confident mistakes, so check anything that matters.
Research
Both offer a "deep research" mode that reads many web pages and writes a report with sources. Google includes Deep Research on the free plan; OpenAI gives free users limited deep research and expands it on Plus and Pro. Gemini's tie to Google Search is a natural strength for current events and local questions. If sourced answers are your main use, also look at our Perplexity AI review.
Working with your own files and apps
This is the clearest dividing line. Gemini on paid plans works inside Gmail and Google Docs (Gmail only on AI Plus; Gmail, Docs and Vids on AI Pro), so it can draft replies, summarize threads and work on documents where they already are. ChatGPT takes the other approach: you bring files to it, or connect it to other services through plugins, and it offers extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets. If your work happens in Google Workspace, Gemini saves steps. If it is spread across many tools, ChatGPT's connectors and plugins are broader.
Images, video and voice
Both create and edit images, including on their free plans with limits. Google's paid plans add video generation with its Veo models and credits for its Flow video tool, which ChatGPT's plans don't headline. Both have live voice conversation: Gemini Live on every Gemini plan, and ChatGPT voice on every plan with "voice with video" from Go upward.
Customization and agents
ChatGPT has custom GPTs (shareable assistants with their own instructions and files), projects, scheduled tasks, skills and memory across chats. Gemini has Gems (saved custom assistants), Canvas for editing documents and code side by side, and a Daily Brief on paid plans. On the top tiers, OpenAI adds Dot, an always-on agent, and Google adds early access to agent features. For most people, ChatGPT's customization options are deeper and more mature.
Coding
ChatGPT plans include Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, with more usage on Plus and Pro. Google AI Pro includes higher limits for Jules, Google's coding agent, and access to its Antigravity developer tool. Both are useful for code questions in chat. If coding is your main use, also read Claude vs ChatGPT, since Claude is a popular choice with developers.
Long documents and context
The "context window" is how much text an assistant can consider at once: your files, the conversation and its own working. Google says Google AI Pro has a 1 million token context window, enough for several long books. OpenAI's pricing page lists 256K tokens for its reasoning models on Plus (about 320 pages of input) and 400K on Pro, with smaller windows for its fast "Instant" model (54K on Plus, 27K on Free). If you regularly paste in long contracts, transcripts or whole codebases, Gemini's larger window is a real advantage.
Pricing as of October 2026
US prices per month. Annual billing and regional prices differ.
| Tier | Gemini | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0, 15 GB Google storage | $0 |
| Entry | AI Plus $4.99: 2x free limits, video generation, Gemini in Gmail, 400 GB | Go $8: more messages, uploads, images and memory; may include ads |
| Standard | AI Pro $19.99: Pro models, 4x free limits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 5 TB | Plus $20: reasoning models, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, expanded Codex |
| Power user | AI Ultra $99.99 or $199.99: 5x or 20x Pro limits, from 20 TB | Pro from $100 (three tiers): Pro reasoning, Dot agent, maximum limits |
| Business | Gemini Enterprise Business $21/seat; Standard/Plus $30/seat | Business standard seat $20 (annual) or $25 (monthly); premium seat $100/$125 |
Value depends on what you already pay for. If you'd buy Google storage anyway, Google AI Pro is effectively storage plus AI for the price of the AI alone. If you don't need storage, ChatGPT Plus gives you more features for the same money. Google Workspace business customers should also check what their existing Workspace plan already includes.
Privacy and data
Gemini. According to Google's Gemini Apps privacy notice, while "Keep Activity" is on, your chats are used to provide and improve Google services, including training its AI models, and a subset of chats is read by human reviewers (disconnected from your account first). Activity is auto-deleted after 18 months by default (you can choose 3 or 36 months). With Keep Activity off, new chats are kept for 72 hours and aren't used for training unless you send feedback. Chats that were human-reviewed can be kept for up to three years. Work and school accounts fall under separate Google Workspace terms.
ChatGPT. OpenAI's pricing page states that on Free, Go, Plus and Pro your content is used to train its models, with an opt-out in settings. Business and Enterprise plans add a dedicated workspace, SSO and admin controls, and OpenAI lists SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 certifications for its business products. Temporary chats are available if you don't want a conversation saved to your history.
In short: on personal accounts both learn from your chats unless you switch it off. Gemini's human review is spelled out more plainly in its notice, which some people will find reassuring and others off-putting. Don't paste anything into either that you wouldn't want stored on the company's servers.
Platforms and integrations
ChatGPT has apps for the web, iOS, Android, Windows and macOS, with extensions for Microsoft Office and Google Sheets and a large plugin directory. Gemini runs on the web, iOS and Android, has had a Mac app since April 2026 and a Windows app since September 2026, is the default assistant on many Android phones, and appears inside Gmail, Docs, Chrome and other Google products depending on your plan. If you are deep in Microsoft 365 instead of either, also read Copilot vs ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT? +
Neither is better for everyone. Gemini is the stronger fit if you live in Gmail, Google Docs and Drive, want a lot of cloud storage bundled with your AI plan, or need very long documents handled in one go. ChatGPT is the better all-rounder if you want the widest set of features in one app: custom GPTs, projects, scheduled tasks, voice with video, image creation and the Codex coding agent. Both have free plans, so try the same real task in each.
Is Gemini free? +
Yes. Google's free Gemini plan includes chat, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems, with lower limits and lighter models than the paid plans. Paid Google AI plans started at $4.99 a month (AI Plus) and $19.99 a month (AI Pro) in the US as of October 2026.
Which is cheaper, Gemini or ChatGPT? +
At the entry level, Google AI Plus was $4.99 a month and ChatGPT Go was $8 a month as of October 2026. The main paid tiers cost about the same: Google AI Pro at $19.99 and ChatGPT Plus at $20. Google AI Pro also includes 5 TB of Google storage, which matters if you already pay for Google One.
Does Gemini or ChatGPT use my chats for training? +
Both can, by default, on personal accounts, and both let you turn it off. Google says Gemini activity is used to improve its services, including training models, while Keep Activity is on, and some chats are read by human reviewers. OpenAI's pricing page says ChatGPT content is used to train its models on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, with an opt-out. Business plans from both companies have different terms.
Can I use Gemini and ChatGPT together? +
Yes. Many people keep the free tier of one and pay for the other, or use Gemini inside Google apps and ChatGPT as a general assistant. Nothing stops you from asking both the same question and comparing answers, which is also a good habit for anything where accuracy matters.
