Verdict

Descript is a great fit for podcasters, video creators, marketers and trainers who find timeline editors slow and want to cut talking-head content as easily as editing a document. Skip it if you only need transcripts (you'd pay for an editor you won't use), if you do complex multi-layer video work, or if your computer is older than macOS 14 or Windows 11.

What Descript is

Descript started as a podcast editing tool built on automatic transcription and has grown into a full audio and video editor. When you import or record media, Descript transcribes it; the transcript becomes the main way you edit. Delete a sentence and it's cut from the audio and video. Select a word and you can jump to it, move it or replace it. A traditional timeline is still there for fine adjustments, along with scenes, layouts, captions and stock media.

On top of that sits a set of AI tools. Underlord, Descript's AI co-editor, can carry out edits from a prompt. Studio Sound cleans up voice recordings. Remove Filler Words strips "ums" and "uhs". Create Clips finds short segments for social media. Paid plans add AI voices, including a clone of your own voice, so you can fix a misspoken word by typing it.

Key features

  • Text-based editing of audio and video, on every plan.
  • Transcription in 25 languages, included on all plans.
  • Underlord AI co-editor (limited on Free and Hobbyist, full on Creator and above).
  • Studio Sound, filler-word removal and other AI audio tools.
  • AI voices and voice clones for correcting or generating speech.
  • Recording: screen and camera recording, plus remote recording rooms with hours that vary by plan.
  • Clips, captions and layouts for social video.
  • Translation and dubbing in 30+ languages, custom avatars and a team Brand Studio on Business.
  • Exports up to 720p on Free (watermarked), 1080p on Hobbyist and 4K on Creator and above.

Pricing

Prices below are per person per month, in US dollars, as of October 2026, from Descript's pricing page. "Annual" is the monthly price when billed yearly. Two allowances shape every plan: media hours (all audio and video you import or record) and AI credits (used by AI features).

Plan Annual Monthly Media hours AI credits Export and storage
Free $0 $0 1/month 100 one-time 720p with watermark, 5 GB
Hobbyist $16 $24 10/month 400/month 1080p, no watermark, 100 GB
Creator $24 $35 30/month 800/month 4K, 1 TB; up to 3 seats
Business $50 $65 40/month 1,500/month 4K, 2 TB; up to 5 seats, priority support
Enterprise Talk to sales Custom Custom SSO and SCIM, audit logs, custom terms

Descript's page says annual billing saves up to 35% over monthly.

Strengths

  • Editing by text really is faster for speech-heavy content. This is the reason Descript has a loyal following among podcasters and creators.
  • Good one-click audio cleanup. Studio Sound and filler-word removal are frequently cited as time savers.
  • All-in-one. Record, transcribe, edit, caption and export without moving between apps.
  • Transcription included everywhere, with 25 languages.
  • Strong security basics. SOC 2 Type II, encryption, and opt-in sharing of transcription data.

Weaknesses

  • Two meters to watch. Media hours and AI credits both run out, and heavy AI use can push you into top-ups or a bigger plan.
  • The free plan is a taster. One media hour and watermarked 720p exports.
  • Performance on long projects. A common pattern in user feedback is slowness and occasional instability on long or complex projects, especially on older machines.
  • Not a pro video editor. For effects-heavy or multi-layer work, editors like Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut are better tools.
  • Frequent changes. Descript has reworked its interface and plans several times; some long-time users find the changes disruptive.
  • Recent systems only. The desktop app needs macOS 14 or Windows 11.

Privacy and security

Descript's security page says it has achieved SOC 2 Type II compliance, encrypts stored data with AES-256 and uses HTTPS (TLS 1.2) in transit. Project files and transcripts are stored on Descript's servers, on Amazon S3 or Google Cloud. It says project data is used only to provide the service, not sold or used for advertising; sharing transcription data to improve transcription is opt-in and off by default; and audio you provide for a custom voice is used "to improve our service". Deleted projects are permanently removed within 30 days.

Because Descript is cloud-based, your recordings are uploaded to its servers to be transcribed and edited. That is normal for this kind of tool, but worth knowing for confidential material.

Platforms

  • Mac: macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.
  • Windows: Windows 11 or later.
  • No Linux app; no mobile editing app listed on the download page.

Which plan makes sense

Start by estimating how much media you bring in each month, because every minute you import or record counts against media hours, even raw footage you end up cutting. A podcaster recording one hour-long episode a week with a couple of retakes fits within Hobbyist's 10 hours. A YouTuber working with long raw recordings, or anyone exporting in 4K, will want Creator's 30 hours. Business is for small teams that need Brand Studio, translation and dubbing, or priority support.

Then check AI credits. If you lean on Underlord, AI voices or video generation, credits can run out before media hours do. Creator and above can buy top-ups for both.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

  • Good fit: podcasters, interviewers and video creators whose content is mostly people talking.
  • Good fit: marketers and trainers making tutorials, social clips and course videos without editing experience.
  • Good fit: small teams that want shared projects and brand templates.
  • Poor fit: filmmakers and motion designers who need advanced color, effects and compositing.
  • Poor fit: people who only need transcripts, or who have confidential recordings that shouldn't be uploaded.

Alternatives

  • OBS Studio: free screen and camera recording, with no editing or transcription.
  • Loom: quick screen recordings for work, with basic editing and transcripts.
  • Otter.ai: transcription and notes, if you don't need to edit media.
  • If what you mainly need is transcripts of meetings or recordings, Hark (made by us) transcribes on your own computer with no media-hour limits, labels who spoke, and imports mp3, m4a, mp4, wav and other files. It is not an editor, transcribes English only, and records audio rather than video.

Guides: transcribe an audio recording to text and transcribe MP4 to text.

Bottom line

Descript is one of the most approachable ways to edit spoken audio and video, and its AI cleanup tools are genuinely useful. Pick the plan by media hours first, then AI credits. If you only need transcripts, a dedicated transcription tool will cost less.
