The best transcription software for Mac
For quick recordings, the free Voice Memos and Notes apps already transcribe on Apple silicon Macs. For serious transcription on your Mac, MacWhisper is the most popular local app, and for meetings with several speakers, Hark transcribes on your Mac and names who said what, for free.
What to look for in Mac transcription software
- Local or cloud. Apple silicon Macs are fast enough to transcribe on the device, so your audio never has to leave your Mac. Cloud apps can be convenient but upload your files.
- Speaker labels. For interviews and meetings, you want "who said what", not a wall of text.
- Recording other apps. macOS doesn't let apps capture another app's sound by default. If you want to record Zoom or Teams directly, check that the app supports it.
- Languages. Whisper-based apps cover dozens of languages; some others are English only.
- Price model. One-time purchase, subscription, or free.

The best Mac transcription apps
Voice Memos and Apple Notes: free and already on your Mac
On Apple silicon Macs with macOS 15 or later, Voice Memos shows a transcript while you record or afterwards, and Notes can record audio right inside a note and transcribe it. Notes supports English and several other languages, and with Apple Intelligence it can summarize the recording. On macOS Tahoe 26, calls made in the Mac's Phone app can be recorded into Notes with a transcript.
Pick these if you want a quick transcript of a lecture, memo or solo recording and don't need speaker labels. They don't separate speakers or capture audio from Zoom and other apps.
MacWhisper: the go-to local transcription app
MacWhisper runs Whisper and Parakeet models on your Mac, so files are transcribed without uploading them. It can record audio from any app (including Zoom, Teams and Webex calls), recognize speakers, and connect to AI models with your own API keys or local models. There's a free version, and Pro is a one-time €64 purchase as of October 2026. Its website doesn't spell out exactly which features are Pro-only, so check before you buy.
Pick it if you want a Mac-native app that records calls and transcribes in many languages. It's Mac only. See our MacWhisper alternatives if you also use Windows or Linux.
Hark: meetings and interviews with speaker names
Hark transcribes on your Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel) and works out who spoke by their voice. Name a voice once and Hark recognizes that person in every later recording, which is a big help if you interview the same people or meet the same team every week. The player highlights each word as it plays, can skip silences and speed up without chipmunk voices, and you can edit any line.
Be aware: on macOS, Hark records the microphone only, because capturing computer audio isn't built for Mac yet. It won't capture the other side of a Zoom or Teams call unless that sound plays through your speakers into the mic. Where Hark on a Mac shines:
- In-person meetings and interviews recorded with your Mac's microphone.
- Voice memos and existing recordings: drag in .m4a files from Voice Memos or QuickTime, or mp3, wav, mp4, mov and more.
- Call recordings you already have, such as a Zoom cloud recording you downloaded.
Transcription, speaker recognition and import are free with no limits. Hark is English only. With a subscription ($12/month, after a 2-day preview), Claude writes notes from the transcript text.
Aiko: simple, private and cheap
Aiko runs Whisper on your Mac for a one-time $24 (covering Mac, iPhone and iPad). You record elsewhere and import the file. No live transcription or speaker labels, but excellent for straightforward, private file transcription.
Superwhisper: dictation first
Superwhisper is mainly for dictating text anywhere on your Mac, with unlimited local dictation free. Pro ($8.49/month as of October 2026) adds file transcription, system-audio recording, speaker separation and cloud models.
Otter.ai and Descript: cloud options
Otter's Mac desktop app records meetings without a bot and gives live transcripts and AI summaries; the free plan has 300 minutes a month. Descript is a cloud editor for podcasts and video where you edit audio by editing text, with transcription in 25 languages; its free plan includes 1 media hour a month. Both upload your audio.
Turn your Mac recordings into named transcripts
Drop in a voice memo, interview or meeting recording. Hark transcribes it on your Mac and labels each speaker, free with no limits.
How to transcribe an audio file on a Mac
- Built in: open the recording in Voice Memos (macOS 15+, Apple silicon) and click the transcript button.
- With speaker labels: download Hark, open it, and drag the file onto the window (or use File > Import).
- Wait for transcription to finish. It runs on your Mac; the first time, Hark downloads its speech models (about 730 MB).
- Listen to a short clip of each voice and type their name.
- Fix any line by editing it, then export the transcript.
If you're recording other people, recording laws vary and some require everyone's consent, so ask first. For more help, see how to transcribe voice memos, record internal audio on a Mac, or transcribe any recording to text.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Mac have built-in transcription? +
Yes. On Apple silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later, Voice Memos can transcribe recordings live or afterwards, and the Notes app can record audio and transcribe it. Availability depends on your country and language. These are great for quick recordings, but they do not label speakers or record audio from other apps.
What is the best free transcription software for Mac? +
Apple's Voice Memos and Notes are free and built in. MacWhisper has a free version that transcribes on your Mac with local models. Hark is free for unlimited transcription on your Mac and adds speaker recognition, though on macOS it records the microphone only and is English only.
Can I transcribe a Zoom or Teams call on a Mac? +
Yes, but it takes the right tool, because macOS does not let ordinary apps record other apps' audio without extra setup. Zoom and Teams have their own transcription on eligible plans, and apps such as MacWhisper (with its app audio feature), Otter, Granola and Superwhisper Pro can capture call audio on a Mac. Hark on a Mac records the microphone only, so it suits in-person meetings and recordings you import.
Is there transcription software for Mac that works offline? +
Yes. MacWhisper, Aiko, Superwhisper's local models and Hark all transcribe on your Mac, so audio is not uploaded. Hark downloads its speech models once (about 730 MB) and then transcribes offline. Cloud tools such as Otter and Descript need an internet connection.
How do I transcribe a voice memo on a Mac? +
On macOS 15 or later with Apple silicon, open Voice Memos, select the recording, and click the transcript button to see the text. To get speaker labels or edit and export a transcript, drag the .m4a file into an app like Hark or MacWhisper. Our voice memos guide walks through both ways.
Record, transcribe and remember every meeting
Hark records your calls on your own computer, transcribes them privately, and learns who is speaking. Free forever, with a 2-day preview of AI meeting notes.
