What Notion AI is
Notion AI is not a separate app. It is a set of AI features inside the Notion workspace (see our main Notion review for the workspace itself). Because it runs where your documents and databases already are, it can use them as context: summarize a project's pages, answer "what did we decide about pricing?" from your meeting notes, fill in database properties, or draft a document from several sources.
Over 2025 and 2026 Notion has reshaped how it sells AI. It used to be a per-member add-on. Today the pricing page bundles the full set of features into the Business and Enterprise plans, with a limited trial on Free and Plus, and charges separately (in "Notion credits") for Custom Agents that run on their own.
Key features
Notion Agent
Notion Agent is the main assistant. Notion describes it as completing complex, multi-step tasks using context from Notion, your connected apps and the web: for example, building a database from a brief, updating many pages at once, or turning notes into a project plan with tasks. It sits in the sidebar and on every page.
Custom Agents
Custom Agents are agents you set up to handle repetitive work automatically, such as triaging requests into a database or posting weekly summaries. They are free to try and then run on Notion credits ($10 per 1,000 credits a month).
Enterprise search and connectors
Enterprise search (labeled beta on Business) looks across Notion and connected tools such as Slack, Google Drive and GitHub, and answers with links to sources. Research mode builds longer reports from those sources.
Writing and database autofill
The familiar features are still here: draft, rewrite, shorten, translate and fix grammar in any block, and AI autofill properties that summarize or classify each row in a database.
AI Meeting Notes
AI Meeting Notes records a conversation, transcribes it and writes a summary with action items into a Notion page. According to Notion's help center:
- No bot joins the call. Recording happens on your device.
- The desktop app (macOS 13+ or current Windows) captures both your microphone and your computer's audio, so it works with Zoom, Teams, Meet or anything else. The browser and mobile apps only use the microphone.
- Transcription in 16 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Chinese; speaker labels are English only.
- Audio is not kept. Audio goes to Notion's processing partners, which don't store it; a temporary local copy is deleted after processing (Notion keeps failed uploads for up to 3 days).
- Consent tools: a chat message or spoken notice you can use, and an automatic consent message workspace owners can enforce.
- Limits: up to 10 hours a day per user; it needs an internet connection and about a minute of speech before it can summarize.
Notion AI pricing (as of October 2026)
From Notion's pricing page, per member per month.
| Plan | Price | AI included |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited trial of Notion AI and AI Meeting Notes |
| Plus | $10 yearly / $12 monthly | Limited trial of Notion AI and AI Meeting Notes |
| Business | $20 yearly / $24 monthly | Notion AI with Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, enterprise search (beta), premium connections |
| Enterprise | Custom | Everything in Business plus zero data retention with AI providers and admin controls |
| Custom Agents | $10 per 1,000 credits/month | Free to try, then billed by usage on Business and Enterprise |
The practical question is the jump from Plus to Business: $10 more per person per month on yearly billing. Business also brings SAML SSO, private teamspaces and longer page history, so for many teams the AI is part of a broader upgrade.
Strengths
- Context. AI that can read your own wiki, projects and meeting notes gives much more useful answers than a general chatbot pasted with a few paragraphs.
- Meeting notes without a bot, captured on the desktop with system audio, and filed in the same workspace as the project.
- Many languages for transcription.
- One bill. On Business, AI is included rather than a separate per-seat add-on.
- Clear AI data terms: no training on customer data by default, with retention limits spelled out by plan.
Weaknesses
- Business plan required for real use. Free and Plus get a trial, not a working allowance.
- Usage-based agents. Custom Agents run on credits, which makes costs harder to predict.
- Only as good as your workspace. If your Notion is messy or out of date, answers will be too.
- Meeting notes are cloud processed and online only. There is no offline mode, and the audio is sent to processing partners.
- Browser and mobile recording use only the microphone, so for calls you need the desktop app.
- Speaker labels are English only, and there is no way to teach it who people are by voice across meetings.
Privacy and security
Notion's AI security page says customer data is excluded from model training by default, and its contracts bar AI providers from training on it. On Free, Plus and Business, AI providers keep data for 30 days or less; Enterprise gets zero data retention for most models, with data-retaining models off unless an admin turns them on. Embeddings used for search are deleted within 60 days of the page or workspace being deleted.
For meetings, check your local recording laws: some places require everyone's consent. Notion's built-in consent message is a helpful nudge, not a legal guarantee. Our guide to recording consent laws by state covers the US rules.
Platforms
Notion AI works wherever Notion does: Windows and macOS desktop apps, iPhone, iPad and Android, and the web. AI Meeting Notes with computer audio needs the desktop app (version 4.7.0 or later) on macOS 13+ or current Windows.
Alternatives
- A general assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT, if you mostly want writing help and don't need it to read your workspace.
- Obsidian with community AI plugins, if you want local notes and are happy to bring your own AI key. See Notion vs Obsidian.
- ClickUp, whose Brain AI covers tasks, docs and an AI notetaker inside project management.
- For meeting notes on their own: our own app, Hark, records on your computer without a bot, transcribes locally (English only) and learns who people are by voice. Recording and transcription are free; AI notes by Claude are $12 a month. On a Mac it records the microphone only, so Notion's desktop app captures calls more completely there.
