What Superhuman is
Superhuman launched in 2017 as an invitation-only email client for busy professionals, famous for its speed and its onboarding calls. It sits on top of your existing Gmail or Outlook account: your mail stays with Google or Microsoft, and Superhuman is a faster way to read, sort and answer it.
In 2025 Grammarly bought Superhuman, and in October 2025 the combined company took the Superhuman name. The email app is now called Superhuman Mail and is part of a suite with Grammarly, Superhuman Docs and Superhuman Go, an AI assistant that works across apps.
Key features
Keyboard-first design
Almost everything has a shortcut, and the command palette (Cmd+K on Mac, Ctrl+K on Windows) finds any action. Superhuman's whole pitch is that you rarely need the mouse.
Split Inbox
Split Inbox separates email into streams such as your team, VIPs, calendar invites or notifications from tools like Google Docs, Notion and Asana, so the important messages are not buried.
Superhuman AI
Superhuman AI helps organize email, drafts replies and can run multi-step email tasks. On the Business plan, Auto Drafts writes replies before you open a message, Ask AI answers questions about your inbox, and custom AI labels sort mail by rules you describe in plain words. Business also includes a Superhuman Mail MCP server so AI assistants can work with your email.
Productivity tools
Snooze, follow-up reminders, Send Later, Snippets (reusable text), Instant Reply, undo send, read statuses, shared conversations with teammates and calendar scheduling from inside email.
Integrations
Business adds HubSpot and Salesforce integrations, and the suite brings in Grammarly's writing checks.
Pricing (as of October 2026)
Superhuman's suite plans page lists the Business plan, which includes Mail, at $40 per member a month or $33 billed yearly. The separate Mail plan prices below were reported by a pricing comparison checked on September 28, 2026; Superhuman's Mail pricing page did not show prices to automated checks, so confirm before buying.
| Plan | Price per member | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Mail Starter | $30/month, or $25/month billed yearly (reported) | The Superhuman client, Superhuman AI, calendar and scheduling, team collaboration. |
| Mail Business | $40/month, or $33/month billed yearly | Starter plus Auto Drafts, Ask AI, custom AI labels, Mail MCP, HubSpot and Salesforce, Recent Opens. |
| Enterprise | Custom | SSO, advanced security controls, team analytics, customer success manager. |
| Suite Free / Pro | $0 / $15 a month ($12 billed yearly) | Grammarly and Superhuman Docs features; does not include Mail. |
There is no free Superhuman Mail plan. The Business suite price also includes Grammarly and Superhuman Docs, which makes it better value if you would pay for Grammarly anyway.
Strengths
- Speed. The most consistent praise is how fast it feels and how quickly heavy email users can clear their inbox.
- Polished design. A clean, focused interface across desktop and mobile.
- Split Inbox. Keeps important email separate from notifications and newsletters.
- AI that fits the workflow. Auto Drafts and Ask AI work inside the inbox rather than in a separate chat.
- Works on every major platform. Mac, Windows, web, iPhone and Android.
- Bundle value. Business includes Grammarly and Docs.
Weaknesses
- Price. $25 to $40 a month per person is high for an email app, especially as Gmail and Outlook add their own AI.
- Gmail and Outlook only. No support for iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail or other IMAP accounts.
- Best AI is on Business. Auto Drafts, Ask AI and custom labels need the higher plan.
- Learning curve. The speed depends on learning shortcuts; mouse-first users get less out of it.
- Cloud access to your mail. Superhuman needs access to your mailbox to work, which some organizations restrict.
- Product changes. The Grammarly merger brought new plan structures and bundles, and the direction of the suite is still settling.
Privacy and security
What Superhuman states, as of October 2026:
- Your email stays in your Gmail or Outlook account; Superhuman connects to it with the access you grant.
- Enterprise adds SSO and advanced security controls.
- Read statuses use tracking images. After criticism in 2019, Superhuman removed location data from read statuses and made them off by default.
- The wider suite's enterprise offerings advertise data loss prevention, bring-your-own-key encryption and audit logs.
- AI features process email content to generate drafts and answers, so check your organization's policy before turning them on for work mail.
Platforms
- Desktop: native apps for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows
- Web: through Chrome
- Mobile: iPhone, iPad and Android
- Email providers: Gmail / Google Workspace and Outlook / Microsoft 365
Alternatives
- Gmail and Outlook themselves: free or included with Workspace and Microsoft 365, with Gemini and Microsoft Copilot built in.
- Spark and Shortwave: AI email clients with smart inboxes at lower prices.
- Grammarly: if you only want better-written email, without changing email apps.
- Calendly: if scheduling from email is the main time sink.
Is Superhuman still worth it with AI in Gmail and Outlook?
When Superhuman launched, its main rivals were the plain Gmail and Outlook apps. Today Gmail has Gemini and Outlook has Copilot, both of which summarize threads and draft replies. That narrows Superhuman's advantage on AI.
What Gmail and Outlook still do not match, according to the pattern of user feedback, is the overall speed and focus: instant search, shortcuts for every action, Split Inbox and features like reminders and Snippets designed to work together. If your day is mostly email, those small time savings add up. If email is a minor part of your day, the built-in AI is likely enough and costs nothing extra.
It also matters whether you already pay for Grammarly. The Business plan includes it, so for a Grammarly Pro user the extra cost of adding Superhuman Mail is smaller than the headline price suggests.
Tips for getting value from Superhuman
- Learn ten core shortcuts first (archive, reply, snooze, remind, search) before adding more.
- Set up Split Inbox splits for your team and VIPs so they are always at the top.
- Turn on follow-up reminders for emails that need a reply.
- Leave read statuses off unless you genuinely need them.
Who should use Superhuman
Superhuman is for founders, executives, salespeople and anyone else who handles a large volume of email in Gmail or Outlook and values speed enough to pay for it. Try it with a trial and commit to learning the shortcuts for a couple of weeks; that is where the value is. If your email load is light, or you use another provider, the built-in apps are the better choice.
